Big Night

1h 49m Drama, Romance 1996

Big Night, one of the great films about food, like so many independent films of the decade, was born of frustration. Tired of the unrewarding work that had constituted much of his acting career thus far, Stanley Tucci co-wrote a screenplay that would give him the chance to shine. He plays Secondo, who, along with brother Primo (Tony Shalhoub), runs a failing Italian restaurant in 1950s New Jersey. Tensions between the two brothers rise and arguments flare when Primo considers a return home to Italy while Secondo enjoys all that America has to offer, particularly its women, including girlfriend Phyllis (Minnie Driver) and mistress Gabriella (Isabella Rossellini). When Gabriella’s husband, a rival restauranteur makes a magnanimous gesture that could help the brothers turn their business around, they pour everything they have into their preparations in this sumptuous feast of a film.
