This biopic of Czech herbalist and healer Jan Mikolášek, a figure of some renown in his home country, is a typically elegant and intelligent film from director Agnieszka Holland (In Darkness, 2011). Following his traumatic experiences as a young man in the military, Mikolášek (Josef Trojan, whose father Ivan plays the elder version of the character) becomes apprentice to a local healer who examines urine to make diagnoses. Allied to his knowledge of and skill with plants, he begins a career which brings him wealth, fame and respect as powerful figures come under his care. However, with the advent of communism, scepticism and the suspicions of an illicit relationship with his male assistant lead to a dangerous fall from grace.
