The remarkable feature debut of Darren Aronofsky (Requiem For A Dream, 2000; Black Swan, 2010) is a cerebral exploration of finding order in chaos masked as a paranoid thriller. Unemployed number theorist Max (Sean Gullette) designs a computer program that he believes will help him make his fortune on the stock market. However, on application the program prints out a seemingly random number of 216 digits before crashing. Attempting to discover the source of the number leads Max to an investigation of the mathematical properties claimed to underly the Torah. His work leads him into increasing danger both from those who wish to use his discovery, and to his own sanity in this gripping and intriguing film.
