Planes, Trains and Automobiles

1h 32m Comedy 1987

Although best known as perhaps the definitive chronicler of the American teenager experience in films such as The Breakfast Club (1985) and Pretty In Pink (1986), John Hughes also made the occasional foray into depictions of adulthood, as in the underappreciated She’s Having A Baby (1988), and this, one of his most enduring films and now something of a holiday staple. Advertising executive Neal Page (Steve Martin at his most tightly wound) is trying to make it home to spend Thanksgiving with his family. Facing one delay after another, Neal is forced to throw his lot in with shower ring curtain salesman Del Griffith (the great John Candy in what became a signature role). Del’s affable, easy-going nature is at odds with that of his easily and repeatedly irritated companion. Despite the comedy (and the film is very funny), it is also a study in loneliness and quiet despair, sensitively and unobtrusively managed by Hughes.
