Promising Young Woman
Cassie (Carey Mulligan) is a 30-year-old woman who once held a promising career as a doctor before a mysterious event derailed her future. Now emotionally unavailable, she lives at home with her parents, and is apathetic in her job as a barista. By night however, she enacts a vendetta against ‘nice guys’ on the prowl in bars, posing as drunk so they will take advantage and bring her home, where she metes out her own particular brand of justice.
Emerald Fennell’s debut feature begins as a deliciously dark and vengeful comedy, tonally not dissimilar from the TV show Killing Eve, which she co-wrote, before gradually morphing into something more unsettling, an angry response to a world where women are frequently blamed for the harassment they endure.
