Gemma Atherton is reclusive writer Alice, living in a coastal Kent village. Locally she’s viewed with suspicion and disapproval; the neighbourhood kids irritate her and call her a witch. It’s war time so she finds herself landed with London evacuee schoolboy Frank, whose cheerful pursuits conflict with her quiet existence. While the story may seem a familiar one, the background to Alice’s reclusiveness and dislike of children is slowly revealed, and her love affair which went against all societal mores of the period.
A simmering, emotional tale that is beautifully shot and co-stars Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Tom Courtenay.
