That Obscure Object of Desire (1977)

Comedy, Drama 1h 42m

In its arresting opening, Luis Buñuel’s final film sees middle-aged Frenchman Mathieu (Fernando Rey) pour a bucket of water over the head of the young woman who is his travelling companion. When his actions are challenged by fellow passengers, he recounts the tale of his long and difficult relationship with Conchita, the Spanish woman concerned. His life with her has, in typically Buñuellian fashion, been one of erotic frustration as she entices him repeatedly over the years with the unfulfilled promise of consummation. In one of the film’s most playful touches, Conchita is portrayed by two women, Carole Bouquet and Ángela Molina, who give the character not only different appearances, but different temperaments, brilliantly representing Conchita’s elusiveness and ultimate inaccessibility.
