The Rider (Alec Secareanu, God’s Own Country) is an ordinary, hard-working man. Everything he does is done to protect and support his family. He works as a delivery driver for a local pizza restaurant, which happens to be owned and run by his landlord. The Rider’s wife, Elena (Anamaria Marinca), spends her days cleaning grand houses and caring for their two children. When the Rider’s moped is stolen, his life is thrown into chaos and a race against time begins to recover the source of his livelihood. Matt Chambers’s gritty and impressive debut feature is intentionally reminiscent of Vittorio De Sica’s 1948 neorealist classic Bicycle Thieves, while reflecting the harsh realities of the current immigrant experience.
