Tove

1h 43m Drama, F-Rated, Biography 2020

Helsinki, 1944. The end of the war brings a new sense of artistic and social freedom for painter Tove Jansson (Alma Pöysti), who has been struggling to emerge from the shadow of her famous father, Viktor Jansson, a renowned sculptor, who dismisses her interest in hand-drawn cartoons. As she strives for recognition in the art world, the enchanting tales of the hippo-like Moomin creatures, which she conceived to soothe scared children in bomb shelters, become an unexpected success, bringing international fame and financial security. At her first solo exhibition she meets the married theatre director Vivica Bandler (Krista Kosonen); a passionate and all-consuming love affair ensues, despite Tove’s existing relationship with left-wing politician Atos Wirtanen (Shanti Grau Roney), who is also married.
