Bad Luck Banging or Loony Porn
Winner of the Golden Bear at this year’s Berlin Film Festival, the new film from acclaimed director Radu Jude (The Happiest Girl In The World, 2009; I Do Not Care If We Go Down in History As Barbarians, 2018) is one of the most inventive, original, and provocative of the year.
It centres on frazzled schoolteacher Emi (Katia Pascariu), who is concerned for her job after a sex tape featuring her and her husband surfaces online. The film begins by presenting said tape in all of its explicit detail before shifting to Emi as she walks the streets of contemporary Bucharest, surrounded by citizens whose frustrations, exacerbated by the stresses of the pandemic, point to the worst facets of Romanian society. These are further explored in a tangential interlude before Emi is forced to defend herself in a court setting.
