Band of Outsiders

1h 38m Drama, Comedy, Crime 1964

Bande à part sees Godard at his lightest and most accessible in a film which follows three young misfits – Franz, Arthur, and Odile – who wander through Paris dreaming of romance, rebellion, and easy money. When Arthur convinces the others to rob Odile’s aunt’s house, their half-serious ploy becomes a playful, melancholic crime caper. Godard blends noir, comedy, and poetic detachment, creating iconic set pieces – the café dance sequence; the Louvre race – that capture the trio’s yearning for freedom; but beneath its spontaneity lies a portrait of youth chasing possibility before reality closes in.
