Losing Alaska

1h 22m Documentary, Irish Film 2017

Due to rising temperatures, the village of Newtok, Alaska is slowly vanishing into the sea. The 375 inhabitants of this vast and austere area of permafrost watch their homes disappear as winter storms steal their coastline and erode the edges of their town. The Yup’ik people strive to maintain their lifestyle, fishing and hunting in the traditional way.

Tom Burke (The Liberties, Shooting the Darkness) embedded himself in the community to make this intimate observational study of a small town facing the big problem of climate change. As Donald Trump expresses interest in acquiring Greenland, the inhabitants of this equally remote Northern US outpost struggle to survive in the face of his government’s indifference.
