Red Rooms / Les Chambres Rouges
Taking its cue from the recent popularity of podcasts and extended series that focus on true crime, Pascal Plante’s psychological thriller is a chilly, disturbing portrayal of one woman’s seeming obsession with a serial killer on trial. Ludovic Chevalier (Maxwell McCabe-Lokos) sits impassive in a Montreal courtroom where he is accused of livestreaming to paying viewers on the dark web the murder of three teenage girls. However, the evidence for the charge is not wholly convincing, and the video that might guarantee a conviction has yet to be found. Successful fashion model Kelly-Anne (Juliette Gariépy) is a regular fixture in the public gallery, where she becomes friends with one of Chevalier’s groupies, Clementine (Laurie Babin), who loudly proclaims his innocence. Gariépy excels as the unknowable woman whose motivations keep audiences guessing in this tense and unnerving drama.
