Sisters with Transistors (2020)

1h 24m Documentary, Music, Captioned, F-Rated 2020

Lisa Rovner’s absorbing documentary offers a valuable account of the innovative and pioneering work of composers in the field of electronic music such as Suzanne Ciani, Pauline Oliveros, Wendy Carlos (who soundtracked Kubrick’s A Clockwork Orange), and, of course, Delia Derbyshire. Despite the challenges faced by these remarkable musicians, as women working in a male-dominated sphere, and as creators of a new style of music in opposition to classical modes, the freedom of expression afforded them in working with new technology has proven hugely influential as electronic music has continued to develop and mutate over the decades. International in scope, and created using a rich collage of archival footage and interviews, this is a fascinating document of these outstanding musicians.
