Timbuktu

1h 34m Drama, Irish Film 2004

Alan Gilsenan’s second feature drama, Timbuktu, is a characteristically stylish and uncompromising drama, based on a screenplay by Paul Freaney.

Isabel (Eva Birthistle) and her friend Deecy (Karl Geary), searches for her brother, (Liam Ó Maonlai), a monk kidnapped by Algerian rebels in the North African Sahara. Their quest proves to be a life-altering experience of self-discovery via a series of culture clashes, local superstitions and life-threatening situations along the way. The film pulsates with menace, heightened by edgy camerawork and Ray Harman’s ominous score.
