Further Beyond

1h 30m Documentary, F-rated, Irish Film 2015

Further Beyond, a playful blend of documentary and drama interrogates the process of truth-telling as it retraces Ambrose O’Higgins’s (Aiden Gillen) remarkable journey from Ireland to Chile in the mid-18th century. Father of Bernardo O’Higgins, the first leader of independent Chile, he visits key locations in his life – a lake in Sligo, a field in Meath, the port of Cadiz, and the edge of a snow-covered mountain in the Andes – and speculates on the idea of place and what O’Higgins and his journey embodies.

This is the documentary feature debut from Desperate Optimists, Molloy and Lawlor, acclaimed directors of ten short films and two drama features – Helen (2008) and Mister John (2013).
