Notebook on Cities and Clothes
Aufzeichnungen zu Kleidern und Städten
Wenders was initially reluctant to take the Pompidou Centre’s commission to make a film on ‘fashion’, a field to which he felt he had little to contribute. He found his way into the subject by comparing the creative impulses and methods of film and fashion, and by discovering that his favourite items of clothing had been designed by the same person, Yohji Yamamoto, whose nationality allowed the director further exploration of Japanese culture. Wenders’s fascination with the then-new technology of palmcorders allows for an experimental discussion of the relationship between craftsmanship and consumerism between two men dedicated to their art.
