Incorporating images of the murals featured in the documentary Mur Murs, _Documenteur _is a fiction feature whose title is roughly analogous to the term ‘mockumentary’. Subtitled ‘An Emotion Picture’, the film might easily be considered the most directly autobiographical of Varda’s films, given its context, but, as is so often the case with her work, it ultimately defies such easy categorisation. Emilie (Sabine Mamou, editor of Mur Murs) is a divorced woman living with her young son (Varda’s own child, Mathieu Demy). A woman seemingly discontented and feeling herself to be at a crossroads in her life, Emilie’s life of dislocation in the big city is laced with a melancholy unusual in the director’s work.
