Lions Love
Following the success of The Umbrellas Of Cherbourg (1964), Jacques Demy was invited to direct a film in the U.S. (this would be 1969’s Model Shop). Varda moved with her husband to California, where the two stayed for a number of years, and where she had autonomy to create as she pleased. Lions Love (… And Lies), to give it its full title, was one of these, a customary blend of documentary and fiction starring Viva, one of Warhol’s leading ladies, Jerome Ragni, and James Rado as an L.A. throuple waiting for their big break from famed director Shirley Clarke.
