Les Créatures
One of its creator’s most unusual and complex films, Les Créatures is a work that mixes fantasy and drama and is rich in allegory and symbolism concerning the creative act. After a car crash that left Edgar Piccoli (Michel Piccoli) unharmed but rendered now-pregnant wife Mylène (Catherine Deneuve) mute, Edgar, a science-fiction writer, begins work on a new book. This tome incorporates fellow inhabitants of the isolated island on which the couple live into a story of mind control that sees Edgar play a central role. Varda’s mischievous humour and misdirection come to the fore as the lines between reality and fiction blur.
