Kung-Fu Master!
As with the duo of Mur Murs and Documenteur, Kung-Fu Master! sprang from Jane B. for Agnès V.. Birkin plays Mary-Jane, a housewife who becomes infatuated with Julien (Mathieu Demy), the 15-year-old friend of her daughter Lucy (Charlotte Gainsbourg). Her feelings are reciprocated, and the two spend more and more time together. Varda’s film is no way titillating or sensationalist, as one should surmise from the casting of her own son. A veil is drawn over the degree to which this is a physical relationship as the focus is instead on the consequences to themselves and others, particularly Lucy, of their doomed love.
