Vagabond
The body of an unidentified young woman is found frozen to death in a ditch; investigating officials gather testimonials from a variety of people she encountered prior to meeting her inauspicious end. Rejecting her administrational job, the woman, whom we come to know as Mona, took off for the road, sleeping rough in fields or roadsides, finding cash by whatever means necessary. Inventively structured as a series of standalone vignettes, Varda creates a stark and moving portrait of the troubled Mona, unforgettably played by Sandrine Bonnaire as a resilient, inscrutable and defiant outcast from society.
